For families reading together with a child in a relaxed way
Shared reading gives a child access to an enjoyable text while they practise manageable sections themselves. It should feel like reading together, not another assessment.
Agree a small amount
Choose something the child wants to read and decide where you will stop. A page, short article or part of a chapter may be enough.
Take turns with meaningful sections. Read a demanding paragraph aloud while the child follows, then let them read a shorter section. Supply a difficult word when needed rather than asking for repeated guesses.
Model natural phrasing and expression, but do not correct every hesitation. If a sentence loses its meaning, reread it together once.
Stop while the experience is still positive. Do not insist on finishing the chapter or extend the session because it is going well.
Over time, let the child choose a slightly longer section or take the lead more often.
