Episode five of Talking Dyslexia was recorded in Parliament. In June 2025, my co-host Ellen Broomé, CEO of the British Dyslexia Association, and I sat down with Juliet Campbell MP, who chairs the All-Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Dyslexia, in Portcullis House, part of the parliamentary estate in Westminster. The episode came out on 7 October 2025, during Dyslexia Awareness Week.

Who is Juliet Campbell?

Juliet was elected Member of Parliament for Broxtowe, in Nottinghamshire, in July 2024. She began her career at the entry grade of the Civil Service in Nottingham and went on to become a senior manager in the NHS.

Her work on dyslexia started long before Parliament. As the parent of a dyslexic child, she set up a not-for-profit organisation to raise awareness of dyslexia in schools, colleges and the community, and it trained hundreds of teaching assistants to recognise the signs. Today she chairs the APPG for Dyslexia, a cross-party group of parliamentarians that looks at how dyslexic people are supported.

What the episode covers

  • how being the parent of a dyslexic child inspired her to fight for better policy and support in education

  • the barriers families face when they look for help

  • the journey from grassroots training to parliamentary reform

  • the policy changes she is championing, and how she is bringing dyslexia to the forefront in Parliament

  • the case for a national dyslexia strategy, as the episode’s title puts it

From Westminster to the classroom

Juliet’s episode connects what happens in one classroom with decisions made in Westminster. Since it came out, SEND policy has moved on: the Schools White Paper was published in February 2026, Inclusive Mainstream Fund money reached schools in June and July 2026, and early identification is a stated priority of the proposed reforms. Our guide to the SEND reforms separates what is confirmed from what is still proposed.

Her starting point, teaching assistants who know what to look for, matters in schools today. When everyone working with pupils can spot the signs, fewer children slip through, and that’s something a school can work on now, whatever happens nationally.

The APPG has kept the national picture in view. In September 2025, Juliet chaired its meeting on early identification and screening, where I was one of the speakers, and in January 2026 the group met to discuss a national strategy for dyslexia.
