Inspire Education Trust wanted an efficient screener to help staff triage pupil needs and identify learning gaps.
Vicky Prudham, who leads SEND across several of the trust’s schools, and her colleagues also wanted to improve external assessment referrals, without the administrative burden of manual assessments.
Started with teacher concern. Teachers identified pupils who were experiencing literacy challenges.
Screened those pupils. SENCos used Talamo’s digital dyslexia screener in a targeted way to look at those pupils’ needs in more detail.
Used the reports to plan support. Clear, actionable data helped staff define each pupil’s strengths and challenges, and target interventions to individual needs.
Shared results with families. Parents received clear, simple reports that were easy to understand.
Built it into how SENCos work. Vicky trains the trust’s SENCos to use Talamo strategically, for pupils already identified as having a possible learning need, rather than screening whole year groups.
Pupils engaged. The digital interface felt more like a game than a test, even for pupils who find traditional testing stressful, which gave staff more confidence in the results. The ‘three-eyed cat’ was a particular hit.
More precise identification. Staff can pinpoint specific learning gaps and put targeted interventions in place much earlier. In the trust’s words, Talamo has “helped us to define gaps and begin to target interventions specific to individual needs”.
Better communication with families. The reports have strengthened communication between home and school.
Less admin. A lighter administrative workload lets the team focus on what matters most: improving outcomes for pupils.
